The Digest: A Food Reading Circle

  • The Portico Library 57 Mosley Street Manchester, England, M2 3HY United Kingdom (map)

£3 (plus fee) for 1 session. Book here.

One of a series also taking place on 12 October and 9 November 3-5pm. See event details on Eventbrite here.

Join writer and manager of the Portico Kitchen, Joe Fenn, to explore the rich and expanding world of food writing. Over four sessions, The Digest: A Food Reading Circle will discuss how food has been represented in literature over the decades. Focussing on essays, extracts and other short texts, the group will approach food through a selection of themes, with sessions on identity, ethics, politics and more. From Marcel Proust’s evocative madeleines to Rebecca May Johnson’s epic tomato sauce, Yemisi Aribasala’s ‘don’t-cut-my-leg African chicken’ and David Foster Wallace’s sentient lobsters, the reading list reflects the huge and often surprising variety of the genre of food writing.

All levels of experience and ability are welcome, and attendees are welcome to join as many or as few sessions as they like. All ticket costs are voluntary and go directly to help fund the Portico’s programme of events and exhibitions.

We would, however, love to see some return faces at all sessions so that the conversations can build up over the weeks, and so we are offering a special discount for those who pay for all four sessions up front.

Ticket price includes print outs of all readings for any participants who require them.
