Since 1985, the Portico Prize has awarded £10,000 to the book that best evokes the spirit of the North of England. Once described as 'the Booker of the North’, the biennial prize is the UK’s only award of its kind and accepts submissions across all formats including fiction, non-fiction, and poetry. Previous winning and shortlisted authors include Benjamin Myers, Richard Benson, Anthony Burgess, Val McDermid, Sarah Hall, A.S. Byatt, Hilary Mantel and Simon Armitage.
The Society of Readers and Writing is a revolving group of regional book lovers and literary enthusiasts who collectively determine a longlist from all eligible entries. The longlist is then passed on to a panel of judges, who determine a shortlist and announce the winning author. Judges for the Portico Prize 2022 are Melanie Sykes, Gary Younge, Momtaza Mehri, Sarah Hall and Anita Singh. Previous judges have included Joan Bakewell, Simon Savidge, Zahid Hussain, Jenni Murray, and Holliday Grainger.
