Support the Portico Reunited project

The Portico Library’s Reunited capital project is a £9 million transformation that began in Jan 2024. The project’s goal is for the Portico to become one of the UK’s most accessible, sustainable and dynamic historic libraries.

Our visionary plan is to reunite, renovate and reimagine all parts of our building. We will bring all three floors back into the use of the Library and:

• Reclaim our street-level front entrance with step free access

• Transform all three floors into open, welcoming spaces that feature exhibitions, reading spaces, a creative café, Northern bookshop, family and educational activities and meeting rooms

• Install a lift that will connect all three floors

• Improve conditions for the storage and care of our historic collections and archive with dedicated research spaces

• Future-proof the building, contributing to Manchester’s net-zero goals and ensure our long term financial and environmental sustainability

• Work with Manchester’s diverse communities and visitors to explore, share, and celebrate their stories and the city’s literary and global heritage
