A pop-up display on bookbinding and why it is important for our historic books.

The craft of hand bookbinding is an activity that all can be involved in. Over the last five years participants in the Portico’s bookbinding workshops have created a variety of books and types of bindings. Examples from those workshops are on display alongside materials supplied by the Society of Bookbinders, including a selection of bookbinding tools, how-to-do-it manuals, and other materials on bookbinding.

The display is part of a variety of bookbinding events taking place in Manchester in 2024 - including talks at the Portico Library - in  celebration of the 50th anniversary of the founding of the Society of Bookbinders in Manchester in 1974.
