Join our Portico Library Reading Group to read George Eliot’s Middlemarch volume by volume together.
It is 150 years this year since the final volume of George Eliot’s Middlemarch, A study of Provincial Life was published and the Portico Library has first editions of each volume. The numerous check out dates on the inside cover of these volumes indicate how popular it was with members in 1871 and 1872!
Join us in 2022 to discover or re-discover this classic nineteenth century novel that follows the fortunes of men and women in a fictional Midland’s town at the time of the Great Reform Act (1829-1833).
Volume 1 (covering books 1 and 2) will be discussed in the Portico Library on Thursday 30 June 6-7pm, then Volume 2 (books 3 and 4) online via Zoom on Tuesday 19 July 6-7pm and Volume 3 (books 5 and 6) in the Portico Library on Thursday 11 August 6-7pm. Conversations around Volume 4 (books 7 and 8) will be part of a wider public event on Thursday 29 September at the Portico Library 6-7pm. You can come to one or as many of the group meetings as you like.
