“The building in this print, The Royal Exchange was designed by Thomas Harrison who also designed the Portico Library. The building now houses the Royal Exchange Theatre, transforming a building that was built on the coffers of the transatlantic slave trade into a mouthpiece for the masses, including among them - myself, a descendent of slaves.
My play about black British identity and the contradictions therein, Black Men Walking premiered there in 2018. I love this building and the people in it. Holding the tension between the chains of the past and flight into the future and graciously giving space for both.”
