Ruins at Karnak
This print is among the least well-known from Belzoni’s famous 1820 account. It shows the ruined temple complex of Karnak, viewed from between the two towers of the main gateway or ‘first pylon’. Two men are shown seated in the shadow cast by an enormous column, echoing an ancient Egyptian wish to ‘exist in the shade of Karnak forever!’.
Curated by Dr Campbell Price, Curator of Egypt and Sudan at Manchester Museum.
